Construction mired by asbestos in Quincy, Massachussets

A plan to construct a new concourse through downtown Quincy, Massachusetts, has run into a time consuming and expensive delay on account of the discovery of asbestos-laden construction materials marked for demolition. The discovery of the dangerous asbestos materials will more than double the demolition costs, and push the remainder of the construction project off schedule.

Asbestos was used eagerly throughout the twentieth century in a variety of industries for its strengthening, fire retardant, and insulating properties. The naturally occurring mineral’s utility was additionally compounded by its incredible availability, ease of fabrication and surprising cost efficiency. Asbestos’s alluring properties come at a price, however, and one that wasn’t fully understood until the latter half of the twentieth century.

Asbestos fibers, when accidentally inhaled or ingested, cause respiratory complications, lung cancer, and mesothelioma – an aggressive, terminal cancer which attacks the lining of the body’s organs. Mesothelioma has become a serious problem around the world as asbestos has been introduced to more and more industries. More than ninety thousand people worldwide die annually from the disease, and hundreds of thousands more are affected by other serious asbestos related illnesses.

Asbestos remediation, or the process of properly disposing of the materials during demolition or construction projects, is tedious and expensive. Asbestos materials must be handled by workmen who wear protective clothing and masks, must be kept moist to prevent accidental inhalation, and must be transported to special disposal facilities. These difficulties sometimes lure contractors into cutting corners – a practice whose repercussions are felt by workmen or innocent bystanders in the decades to come.

The Quincy planning director, Dennis Harrington, said that the costs for the concourse’s demolition project were estimated at some $500,000 as early as mid August. The discovery of large amounts of asbestos materials, however, has pushed the price of the demolition up to around $1.1 million.

“It’s turned out to be about as bad as it can be,” said the planning director. “There are lots of hidden floors with asbestos material.”

The Mayor of Quincy, Thomas Koch, although grateful that the discovered material would be handled properly, was frustrated with the additional costs.

“It’s there. We have to deal with it,” he said. “The city’s not picking up the tab thankfully.”

A dilapidated home in Rochester, New Hampshire will soon fall. The eyesore, located on Silver Street, will be demolished in order to make way for a new duplex. The duplex will be built by Habitat for Humanity, reports Fosters.

The city-owned property has continuously crumbled, and is in serious disrepair. The City Council has donated the property to Habitat for Humanity, in order to avoid costly asbestos abatement.

It would have cost the city $50,000 to tear the home down, due to asbestos issues. Since Habitat for Humanity is willing to cover that cost, the city felt it was a wise decision to donate the property.

The organization will tear down the structure, following asbestos abatement. Asbestos is a highly hazardous material, found in many older homes and buildings. When disturbed, the particles can become airborne and pose a serious health risk to those exposed.

Extended exposure to the material has been known to cause several diseases, including malignant mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive asbestos-related disease.

Due to an extended latency period, mesothelioma treatment tends to arrive late. Such treatment is palliative, rather than curative. There is no cure for asbestos cancer.

The organization has already lined up a couple with two children to move in once the home is built. A second family is being considered for the other unit.

The organization holds mortgages for families who cannot acquire a home through a traditional mortgage.

National Mesothelioma Awareness Day slated for September 26th, 2010

A national Mesothelioma Awareness Day could mark the beginning of a more rigorous campaign aimed at curbing the disease’s impact in America and across the world. The motion, proposed and championed with the support of the Mesothelioma Research Foundation, was introduced as H. 771 by Representative Betty McCollum and Senator Patty Murray. The bill is currently foundered in the bureaucratic process, but while it awaits review by the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, hopes remain high.

The proposed first annual National Mesothelioma Awareness Day, slated for the 26th of September, 2010, will serve as the core of activist efforts regardless of whether the bill is actually passed in time. The Mesothelioma Research Foundation, more commonly known as the Meso Foundation, will be in New York on the 26th for the taping of the Today Show, and will be displaying ads in the massive, coveted display windows of the 10 Rockefeller building during that same week.

The Meso Foundation doesn’t have all of its eggs in one basket, though. The foundation continues to sponsor conferences, marathons, races and publicity events that benefit victims and their families, raise money for research, and increase public awareness of the disease.

The Meso Foundation aren’t the only ones concerned about mesothelioma. Florida recently added the 26th of September to its list of state wide recognized days, dubbing the day Mesothelioma Awareness Day in a move that foreshadows the establishment of a nationally recognized awareness day.

Every year, mesothelioma claims the lives of some 2,500 in America or 90,000 worldwide. That may seem like a large number, but the reality is that it’s shockingly low in comparison to those killed by heart disease, traffic accidents, and plenty of other worldwide threats to health and well-being.

The reason mesothelioma is getting so much attention, is because it’s one-hundred percent preventable without restricting anyone’s personal freedoms. Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, a toxic substance historically used as an insulator, sealant, and strengthener in certain building materials.

More than fifty countries around the world, including the majority of the European Union, banned asbestos as soon as it was conclusively linked to life-threatening disease in the 1980?s. America, Britain, Canada and Russia, however, are not among those.

With the establishment of a National Mesothelioma Awareness Day and the ongoing efforts of those driven to eradicate the needless suffering of those afflicted with the disease, the world may be preparing to see a decline of mesothelioma and other asbestos related illnesses.

Advancing the Richardson Olmsted complex, located in Buffalo, New York, is underway. The Richardson Olmsted complex rehabilitation advances a mixed use campus of public and private activities for the region to enjoy.

The former mental hospital is an architectural treasure. Once the complex is maintained and rehabilitated, it will open to the public. The opening will spur tourism, and help boost Buffalo’s economy.

Before the complex is open to the public, however, asbestos must be removed. Asbestos abatement will occur over the next 12 months–making the complex safer for workers and visitors.

Asbestos is a highly hazardous material, found in many older homes and buildings. When disturbed, the material can pose a serious health risk to those exposed. Such exposure has been known to cause several diseases, including mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. Mesothelioma is a rare asbestos-related disease, known to affect 3,000 Americans each year.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for the disease. Instead, patients undergo mesothelioma treatment, such as chemotherapy and radiation, in hopes of survival.

The Richardson Center Corp needs to complete the purchase of the site from the state, reports wgrz.com. Once the purchase is complete, the real rehabilitation can occur. Plans for a hotel, visitor’s center, conference center and architecture center have been planned.

A steam pipe burst in Boston, Massachusetts’ Post Office Square raised asbestos concerns Wednesday. The pipe, which lies beneath Milk Street, burst through the pavement. Dirt and gravel were sent in all directions.

"You couldn’t see. There was like a lot of fog and everything," said a pedestrian. The burst left a large hole in the street.

“Thank goodness there wasn’t no pedestrians or anybody out here, and the weather was like today. Nice day and there would’ve been a lot of people out here, so we’re fortunate it rained as it did," said Fred Ellis Jr., the Boston Fire Department.

The steam leak was similar to another incident in Boston last month, when a pipe burst in the South End area, reports WHDH.

Hazardous material crews were on the scene, prepared to clean up any dangerous substances, such as asbestos. At first, it wasn’t clear if high levels of asbestos had contaminated the area.

Roads were shut following the burst, in order to ensure the public’s safety. No asbestos, however, was discovered on site.

Asbestos is a toxic material, found in many older homes and buildings. When disturbed, the particles can become airborne, and pose a serious health risk to those exposed. Extended exposure to the material has even been known to cause mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a rare asbestos cancer, which affects nearly 3,000 Americans each year. The disease forms from the mesothelium, and most often affects the lung, heart and abdominal cavities.

Crews are working to repair the steam pipe.

Hazardous asbestos material has been removed from the old United Way building in Toldeo, Ohio. The building, located on Jackson Street in downtown Toledo, will soon be demolished. Most of the demolition process, including asbestos removal, has taken place inside the building.

The asbestos abatement process had to occur before demolition could begin, for fear of asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a highly toxic material, found in many older homes and buildings. Once exploited for its fire retardant properties, the material can be found in drywall, roofing and tile flooring.

When the material is disturbed, during renovation or demolition, the toxic particles can become airborne. Once made airborne, the particles are easily inhaled. When inhaled for an extended period of time, those exposed are put at risk for contracting several diseases.

Mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer have all been known to form from extended asbestos exposure. Mesothelioma is the rarest and most aggressive asbestos cancer, known to affect 3,000 Americans each year.

Without a cure, patients must undergo mesothelioma treatment in order to improve their condition. Such treatment most often involves chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. There is currently no cure for asbestos cancer.

External demolition is expected to begin August 28th, reports Fox Toledo. The building will be demolished in sections.

The former United Way building should fall by early October. Once demolished, the city has considered building a park in its place.

Forty-six asbestos filled homes plague Ogden, Texas. The abandoned buildings are not only eyesores, but stand in the way of the town’s Riverfront redevelopment zone. The dilapidated buildings must be removed as quickly and cheaply as possible, in order to redevelop the area.

Ogden Fire Chief Mike Mathieu recently received approval from the state Division of Air Quality to use the structures for fire training, reports Firehouse.com. In the past 30 months, firefighters have extinguished 17 suspected arson fires within the Riverfront area.

Ogden Mayor Matthew Godfrey has noted that burning the houses would save demolition costs, and reduce the amount of debris. Others, however, disagree with Godfrey, and have noted that several dangers could arise from the burning.

Jim Judd, president of Professional Firefighters of Utah, has noted that hazardous substances would need to be removed from the homes, before they are set ablaze. Such abatement process is costly, and, as Judd noted, would dwindle cost savings.

Asbestos inspections have completed, with removal beginning in the next two weeks. The hazardous material must be removed from the homes, before they are demolished. For when asbestos is disturbed, the particles can become airborne, and pose a serious health risk to workers and community residents.

Extended exposure to the material has been known to cause several diseases, including mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is the rarest and most aggressive asbestos-related disease.

For patients faced with the disease, mesothelioma treatment tends to arrive late. For symptoms, such as chest pain and shortness of breath, lie dormant for 10 to 50 years–resulting in a late diagnosis. Asbestos cancer has no known cure.

Officials are still determining whether to burn the buildings, rather than bulldoze.

The Orange Library, located in South Orange, New Jersey, has reopened. The library was closed April 30 due to lead paint and asbestos violations, reports South Orange Patch. The library was closed after it failed to meet a deadline for remediating the problems.

Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr. noted, at the time, that, "the building must close because continued use represents a serious hazard to the health and life of those who use and work at the library.”

In December 2003, the Library Director received a report of an asbestos and lead paint survey, conducted by Hillmann Environmental Group. The survey revealed extensive amounts of lead paint and asbestos were found within the library. Six years passed before the library was closed, and forced to remove the hazardous substances.

Asbestos is a toxic material, found in many older homes and buildings. When disturbed, the material poses a serious health risk to those exposed. Airborne particles are easily inhaled, and have been known to form several diseases, including malignant mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a rare asbestos cancer, known to affect 3,000 Americans each year. The disease attacks the protective linings of the lung, heart and abdominal cavities.

The disease, due to an extended latency period, is difficult to diagnose. Because of this, many patients fail to receive mesothelioma treatment in the early stages of their disease. Treatment is simply palliative for asbestos cancer patients, as there is no known cure.

Now that asbestos and lead paint have been removed, the library is again open to the public.

The Middletown School District has taken its first step toward the demolition of Roosevelt Elementary School, reports the Middletown Journal. The elementary school, located in Middletown, Ohio, has stood vacant for two years.

It will cost the district $402,800 to rid the building of asbestos, and then demolish it. Middletown’s Phase 1 Building Project allotted for $750,000.

“When we campaigned for the bond issue in 2003, one of the promises the board made to the community was that they would not leave any empty buildings standing,” said Debbie Alberico, Middletown City School community relations specialist. “The building is the building…What makes a building is the people in it,” she added.

The Board of Education approved a $64,800 bid from Central Insulation Systems to remove asbestos from the inside of the building. The asbestos abatement process will take six weeks.

Although asbestos abatement is a costly and intricate process, the material must be removed from the building. For when asbestos is disturbed, during renovation or demolition, the particles can easily become airborne, and pose a serious health risk to those exposed.
